A little study on... "The Lamb of God."

Updated: Feb 7, 2022

Post by Elaina Simpson, C.S.

For this evening, I thought I'd post some citations I've had on my computer on the topic of "Lamb of God." I've found these citations to be helpful, refreshing and even healing! These citations answer the question "What is the Lamb of God, and what does it have to do with me?" And the citations also cover the topic/themes of purity, innocence, gender, sacrifice, and our wedded-ness or oneness to Christ. I'll post the citations without commentary below. This is not found in the CS hymnal, but if you'd like something beautiful to listen to while reading, this song (in its spiritual sense) is on theme for tonight. I'll put it here. (Performed by Carrie Underwood.) "LAMB OF GOD. The spiritual idea of Love; self-immolation; innocence and purity; sacrifice." (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 590:9) "And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering"

(Genesis 22:8) “He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.”

(SH 50:1–2) "Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus."

(John 1:35–37) "The Revelator speaks of Jesus as the Lamb of God and of the dragon as warring against innocence."

(SH 564:12–14) "This was 'the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,' — slain, that is, according to the testimony of the corporeal senses, but undying in the deific Mind. The Revelator represents the Son of man as saying (Revelation i. 17, 18): 'I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead [not understood]; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, [Science has explained me].' This is a mystical statement of the eternity of the Christ, and is also a reference to the human sense of Jesus crucified."

(SH 334:21) "Purity was the symbol of Life and Love. The Revelator saw also the spiritual ideal as a woman clothed in light, a bride coming down from heaven, wedded to the Lamb of Love. To John, “the bride” and “the Lamb” represented the correlation of divine Principle and spiritual idea, God and His Christ, bringing harmony to earth."

(SH 561:10) "Look long enough, and you see male and female one — sex or gender eliminated; you see the designation man meaning woman as well, and you see the whole universe included in one infinite Mind and reflected in the intelligent compound idea, image or likeness, called man, showing forth the infinite divine Principle, Love, called God, — man wedded to the Lamb, pledged to innocence, purity, perfection."

(The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, Mary Baker Eddy, 268:29–5) "But the beast bowed before the Lamb: it was supposed to have fought the manhood of God, that Jesus represented; but it fell before the womanhood of God, that presented the highest ideal of Love. Let us remember that God — good — is omnipotent; therefore evil is impotent. There is but one side to good, — it has no evil side; there is but one side to reality, and that is the good side."

(Christian Healing, Mary Baker Eddy 10:5) "But the beast bowed before the Lamb: it was supposed to have fought the manhood of God, that Jesus represented; but it fell before the womanhood of God, that presented the highest ideal of Love. Let us remember that God — good — is omnipotent; therefore evil is impotent."

(Christian Healing, Mary Baker Eddy 10:5–10) "The individuality created by God is not carnivorous, as witness the millennial estate pictured by Isaiah: —

'The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,

And the leopard shall lie down with the kid;

And the calf and the young lion, and the fatling together;

And a little child shall lead them.'

...Understanding the control which Love held over all, Daniel felt safe in the lions' den, and Paul proved the viper to be harmless. All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible."

(SH 514:19–30) "A lamb is a more animate form of existence, and...resembles a mind-offering..."

(Citation shortened for relevancy, SH 541:1–3) "The beast and the false prophets are lust and hypocrisy. These wolves in sheep's clothing are detected and killed by innocence, the Lamb of Love...Divine Science shows how the Lamb slays the wolf. Innocence and Truth overcome guilt and error. Ever since the foundation of the world, ever since error would establish material belief, evil has tried to slay the Lamb; but Science is able to destroy this lie, called evil."

(SH 567:27–5) "[Referring to Jesus] lay himself as a lamb upon the altar of materialism, and therefrom rise to his nativity in Spirit...The corporeal Jesus bore our infirmities, and through his stripes we are healed. He was the Way-shower, and suffered in the flesh, showing mortals how to escape from the sins of the flesh."

(Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 162:14–21) Have a lovely evening,

Elaina
